GU Smart Center Changes Coming

Greenville University has announced a new partnership aimed at guiding the future of its SMART Center in downtown Greenville.

The university has engaged Maryland-based C and D Consulting to help manage the multi-tenant building. The firm, led by Charles McPherson, is providing its services as an in-kind contribution.

C and D Consulting will advise the university on the SMART Center’s use and tenant mix, lease structures, federal funding requirements, and community and economic development strategy. The firm will also represent Greenville University in discussions with prospective tenants. University staff will continue handling the building’s day-to-day operations.

The SMART Center was redeveloped with a grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration. The building includes shared office space for entrepreneurs, remote workers and small businesses, along with a third-floor community room used for meetings and other events.

Greenville University President Suzanne Davis said the university wanted someone who could help it think about the long-term purpose of the SMART Center and how the facility can best serve the community.

The announcement comes as the SMART Center prepares to welcome a new first-floor tenant.

Frida’s Tacos is scheduled to open in January of 2027, serving tacos, burritos, street corn, horchata and house-made salsas. It will be the fifth restaurant owned and operated by the Quiroz family, which also operates restaurants in Taylor Springs, Hillsboro, Virden and Carlinville.
