Catherine Abbie Ryder Bowers

Catherine Abbie Ryder Bowers, age 88, of Godfrey, formerly of Greenville, passed away Saturday, January 3 at Rosewood Nursing Center in Alton. A funeral mass for 88 year old Catherine Abbie Ryder Bowers will be Thursday, January 8 at 4:00 p.m. at All Saints Catholic Church in White Hall, IL. Friends may call Thursday from 2:30 p.m. to service time at the church. Burial will be Friday, January 9 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Lawrence Cemetery in Greenville. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to North Greene Food Pantry or All Saints Church.

The Daws Family Funeral Home in Roodhouse is in charge of arrangements.

She was born May 10, 1926 in Roodhouse, IL, the daughter of Joseph Winthrop and Lora Catherine Ford Ryder. She married Everett Wilson Bowers, Aug. 23, 1947 in Pocahontas, AR. He preceded her in death, Oct. 18, 2013.

Surviving are four children, Mary (Casey) Kemper of New York, NY, Lora Kathleen Haberer of Godfrey, Everett Michael Bowers of Alton, and Charles Patrick Bowers of Silver Spring, MD; seven grandchildren, James (Kimberly Penland) O’Brien of Falls Church, VA, Michelle Kemper (Christopher) Verplaetse of San Francisco, CA, Carin (Christopher ) Moeder of Boston, MA, Susan Haberer of St. Louis, Courtney Kemper of New York, NY, Amanda Bowers of Bloomfield, CO, Kristin Bowers of Montclair, NJ; and six great-grandchildren, Xin Ray, Faolan and Tallulah Penland-O’Brien, Sabin Verplaetse, and Cassandra and Catherine Moeder. She is survived by three siblings, Mary Lashmett of Winchester, Elizabeth Sue (Oliver) Loy of Medora, and Alfred Ryder of Lineville, MO. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Karen Susan in 1973, two brothers, Tom and Joe Ryder, and two sisters, Cordelia Vick and Clara Ryder.

Catherine was a member of the All Saints Catholic Church in White Hall. She graduated from Our Saviors Nursing Program in Jacksonville, IL to become a registered nurse. After raising her family, she was employed as a nurse at the Utlaut Memorial Hospital in Greenville, IL and the Pekin Memorial Hospital until retiring.
