Dr. Boyd E. McCracken, age 91, of Greenville, passed away Monday, January 19 at Helia Healthcare in Greenville. A celebration of life for 91 year old Dr. Boyd E. McCracken will be held Saturday, January 31 at 1:00 p.m. at the Greenville First United Methodist Church. Friends may call from 11:00 a.m. until service time at the church. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church or Emerald Pointe Senior Living Center. The Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Dr. Boyd Ellis McCracken, the son of Dr. William Arthur McCracken DDS and Ruby Ehrstine McCracken, was born on September 8, 1923 in Greenville. He grew up here and attended the public schools and graduated from Greenville High School in 1941. Boyd was educated at Blackburn College, DePauw University, and Indiana University School of Medicine. Boyd answered his country’s call by joining the United states Navy on October 9, 1942 and was stationed at Great Lakes,and was part of V-12 at De Pauw University in Greencastle, IN. He was honorably discharged on December 30, 1945 and was awarded the American Theater Victory Medal. Boyd returned to Indiana University School of Medicine where he graduated in 1947. Dr. McCracken open his practice in Greenville where he served Greenville until being called into service again on April 22, 1952 where he served during the Korean Crisis in Preventive Medicine at Camp Roberts in 1955 where he rose to the rank of Captain, being honorably discharged again on April 21, 1954. Dr. McCracken returned to Greenville where he opened his new office at 100 North Locust where he practiced until moving to the Greenville Hospital Complex with his new office there in 1983. Dr. McCracken retired from Family practice in 1991 and was a medical consultant for the Social Security Disability Services until 2006.
Boyd and Julia B. Cline were united in marriage on August 24, 1945 at the Greenville Methodist Church and enjoyed over 67 years together before her death on January 1, 2013. They are survived by their two children: son Dr. Boyd A. McCracken and his wife Janet of Greenville and daughter Julienne Davis and her husband Thomas Frost of Springfield, five grandchildren: Sarah (David) Wallman, David (Robyn) McCracken, Emily (James) Lee, Stacey Kruger, Kelsi Frost, and 4 great-grandchildren; Madeleine Wallman, James Wallman, Robert McCracken, and Samuel Lee. Dr. McCracken is the last of his generation being preceded in death by his parents, his sister Glenda Norene McCracken in infancy and his two brothers: Dr. Lionel McCracken and Dr. Willis A. McCracken.
Dr. McCracken was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from Greenville Regional Hospital in 2005, was the recipient of the Greenville Chamber of Commerce Gerald R. Turley Award in 2009, and a lifetime member of the Greenville First United Methodist Church.
