Dorothy E. Roe, age 94 of Highland, IL, died Friday, February 13, 2015, at Legacy Place in Highland, IL.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Monday, February 16, 2015, at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, IL, and from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, on Tuesday, February 17, 2015, at First Congregational Church of Highland in Highland, IL.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, February 17, 2015, at First Congregational Church of Highland in Highland, IL, with Rev. Greg S. Brady officiating.

Interment will be at Highland City Cemetery in Highland, IL.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Congregational Church.

She was born July 10, 1920, in Quincy, IL, the daughter of Albert E. and Edith M. (nee McConnell) Sorrill.

On April 19, 1947, she married Isaiah F. Roe who passed away on March 18, 2003.

She was a member of First Congregational Church of Highland. She was also a member of First Congregational Church-Highland; Order of Eastern Star, Highland Chapter #524-Highland; Delta Kappa Gamma (Honorary for Women Teachers); Kappa Delta Phi (Honorary Education Sorority); Sigma Zeta (National Math Honorary); Church Women Volunteers at the First Congregational church; Pierian Study Group-Highland; Christian Women’s Club-Highland.

Mrs. Roe was born on a farm in Adams County, IL; the farm is now the site of the Quincy, IL, airport. She graduated from Quincy High School in 1937; earned a BS from Western Illinois University. During the WWII, she taught in rural schools in Adams County, Liberty High School and Havana Jr. High School for a total of seven years. She and her husband moved to Highland, IL in 1952. From 1957, until retiring in 1978, Mrs. Roe taught Geometry and Latin at Highland High School. Following her retirement,she volunteered with her church and other community groups including Meals-on-Wheels, several local nursing homes, Cub Scouts, Sunday School and church vacation Bible school. She was a private tutor. In the 1980’s she was a Pillsbury Bake-Off finalist. She was the faculty member who instituted the National Honor Society at Highland High School. Since 2011 Mrs. Roe has been a resident of Legacy Place assisted living center in Highland.
