Helen Reavis Tompkins, age 103, of Smithboro, passed away Wednesday, February 18 at Helia Healthcare. Funeral services for 103 year old Helen Reavis Tompkins will be Monday, February 23 at 11:00 a.m. at Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home in Greenville. Burial will be in Maxey Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Pleasant Mound Community Center or Maxey Cemetery.
Helen Margarite Reavis, the daughter of Grover Cleveland Reavis and Clara Cable Reavis, was born April 15, 1911 in Tamalco Township near Pleasant Mound. Helen was born and raised on the Reavis Farm. She attended the Pleasant Mound School and graduated from Mulberry Grove High School in 1930.
Helen and Claude Emmert Tompkins were united in marriage on November 19, 1934 in Vandalia, Illinois. They had 67 years together before his passing in 2002. Helen worked with Claude on the farm and raised their family of five children. Helen is survived by their sons Donald “Jake” (Georgianne) Tompkins of Smithboro, Robert (Janice) Tompkins of Smithboro, Neil (Sally) Tompkins of Yuba City, California, daughter Maxine (Guy) Stewart of Smithboro, 15 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
Helen is preceded in death by her parents, husband Claude, son Maurice “Shorty” Tompkins, and is the last of her generation being preceded by brothers Homer Reavis and Jack Reavis, sisters Mildred O’neal, Fay Duckworth, Lena Siebert, Cleta Watson, and two grandchildren Trevor and Trent.
Helen was active in the Smile a While Robert4-H Club, Try It Craft Club, Smithboro Senior Citizen’s Center, United Methodist Women’s Club and the Pleasant Mound Methodist Church.
