Irene L. Hood, age 96, of Highland, passed away Thursday, February 19, at her home. Funeral services for 96 year-old Irene L. Hood will be Wednesday, February 25 at 11:00 a.m. at the Evangelical United Church of Christ in Highland. Burial will be in Highland City Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland and Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to service time at the church. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Southern Illinois, the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, or the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
She was born on November 26, 1918, in Highland, IL, the daughter of Fred G. and Emma (nee Good) Rutz.
On November 15, 1941, she married Benjamin “Ben” Franklin Hood who passed away on Monday, April 17, 1989.
She was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ. She was also a member of VFW Post 5694 Ladies Auxiliary.
Irene was born in Highland and worked at Moulton-Bartley Shoe Factory after the 8th grade. She worked there until they closed in the late 1940’s. She started working for Basler Electric in its infancy when the company worked in the Basler family garage. She worked there until 1952, and took off a year and a half to start her family. She returned to Basler Electric and retired in 1984 with over 30 years. In retirement she volunteered for the Blood Bank, Friday night Fish Fry’s at the VFW, active with her husband’s Shriner Activities, and helped whom ever asked. She enjoyed crocheting and crafts, and played Bingo 3 nights a week.
