Ferdinand “Fritz” Meyer, age 93 of Carlyle, passed away Friday, February 27 at St. Joseph Hospital in Breese. A Mass of Christian Burial for 93 year old Ferdinand “Fritz” Meyer will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 3 at St. Mary’s Church in Carlyle. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Friends may call Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Zieren Funeral Home in Carlyle. The Knights of Columbus will pray the rosary at 7:00 p.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Church, followed by a walk through and proclamation presentation at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to St. Mary’s Church or Hospice of Southern Illinois.

He was born north of Carlyle on December 15, 1921, a son of Henry and Catherine (Seiffert) Meyer. He married Dolores Hempen on April 25, 1953 at St. Mary’s Church in Carlyle, and she died August 10, 2006.

Mr. Meyer is survived by 3 daughters, Donna (Lee) Wagner of Carlyle, Bette Meyer of Belleville, and Rita Meyer of Belleville; a son, Bill (Maureen) Meyer of Chicago; 2 grandchildren, Sydney and Isabelle Meyer; sisters-in-law, Dolores Hempen, Betty Hempen, Mary Meyer, Billie Werner, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry & Catherine Meyer; wife, Dolores Meyer, and siblings, Sr. Anselma Meyer, O.S.B., Sr. Elizabeth Meyer, O.S.B., Robert Meyer, Henry Meyer, Jr., Joe Meyer, and Paul Meyer; In-Laws Paul and Ray Hempen, Sam Jannett, Ernie Werner and Marie Meyer; and nephews, Gary Jannett and Allen Hempen.

Mr. Meyer served in the U.S. Navy during W.W. II, and owned Home Realty and Builders in Belleville for 30 years before retiring back to Carlyle in 1987. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Carlyle and a 70 year member of K. of C. Council 1382. Fritz was an avid hunter and fisherman, a die-hard Cardinals fan, and enjoyed playing poker, pinochle and euchre.
