Florence Joy Barnes was born January 18, 1913 in Greenville, Illinois, across the street from Greenville College. Her parents were Walter and Laura Joy and her brother and sister were Frank and Laura Louise. She received her bachelor’s degree from Greenville College in music. In Greenville she met her husband-to-be, Melvin Barnes, who came from a small town in New York to study at Greenville College. They moved to Champaign, Illinois, where Mel completed his graduate studies in education at the University of Illinois.

Mel went on to become a public schools administrator, eventually taking on the job of superintendent of schools in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and Portland, Oregon. During their life together, Florence and Mel moved many times, living in the cities of Philadelphia, San Diego, Oklahoma City, Portland, New York City, Chicago and Williamsburg, Virginia. They had 3 sons and this kept Florence very busy along with her duties as a superintendent’s wife. When Florence was not raising her children, she loved to decorate her home and work in the garden. She was also actively involved in church activities.

After Mel passed away, Florence moved to Wisconsin to be near her son Earl and daughter-in-law Shirley who were living in Dodgeville.
