Mary M. Gartside, age 79, of Carlyle, passed away Tuesday, April 14 at Villa Catherine Supportive Living Center in Carlyle. A Mass of Christian Burial for 79 year old Mary M. Gartside will be celebrated Friday, April 17 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Carlyle. Burial will be in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis at a later date. Friends may call Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Friday from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. at Zieren Funeral Home in Carlyle. Memorials are suggested to a charity of the donor’s choice.
She was born in Aviston, Il on November 2, 1935, a daughter of Herman and Frieda (Lueke) Brueggemann. She married Duane Gartside on June 22, 1955 in East St. Louis, Il. and he preceded her in death on June 26, 2007.
Mrs. Gartside is survived by 2 sons, Daniel L.(Kelly) Gartside of Breese and Thomas (Sheryl) Gartside of Sikeston, Mo.; 6 grandchildren, James (Anette), Ashley, Melinie, Krystal (Allen), and Tyler; great grandchildren, Breanna, Ryan, Sierra, Dakoda, Daymian, and Emilee; 1 great great grandchild, Adrianna; and a sister, Agatha Richter of Trenton. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Sr. Renelle Brueggemann, O.S.F.; brothers, Paul Brueggemann (Hazel), Bernard Brueggemann (Janice); and a brother-in-law, Jim Richter.
Mrs. Gartside worked at the Officer’s Club on Scott Air Force Base, at Trenton House, and at Carlyle Meat Market for 15 years. She also sold Avon and enjoyed bingo and sewing. Mrs. Gartside was a member and past president of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, Post 7983 in Trenton.
