Donald E. “Jitter” Carman, age 85, of Carlyle, passed away Wednesday, May 27 at Greenville Regional Hospital. Funeral services for 85 year old Donald E. “Jitter” Carman will be Saturday, May 30 at 11:00 a.m. at Zieren Funeral Home in Carlyle. Burial, with military honors, will be in McKendree Chapel Cemetery near Keyesport. Friends may call Friday from 4:00 t0 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to service time at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Carlyle American Legion Post 404 Baseball.
He was born in Christian County, Illinois on Nov. 26, 1929, a son of Claude and Martha (Cooper) Carman. He married Barbara Travis on January 13, 1952 in Keyesport, and she survives in Carlyle. Mr. Carmen is also survived by children; Eric and wife Karen Carman, Mindy and husband Bob Gustafson, and Debbie and husband Dennis Tegenkamp of Breese; 8 grandchildren, Heidi Bolles, Travis Tegenkamp, Jamie (Tim) Hoffman, Chris (Jaclyn) Gustafson, Jason Carman, Megan (Matt) Mann, Grant Carman, and Bryce Bradford ; and 9 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, Ruby Bretz and husbands John Bretz and Phillip Jones, and Bonnie Carver & husband Ralph.
Mr. Carman retired after 35 years from American Steel. After his retirement, he stayed busy with painting, carpentry, and general handyman jobs. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea, and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received. He was very patriotic, and loved his country, and was a member of V.F.W. Post 3523 in Carlyle and American Legion Post 1994, in Keyesport. He played steel guitar for 50 years for numerous area country bands, and was an avid fan of the Cardinals, American Legion Baseball, and all High School sports, especially the Carlyle Indians.
