Gary L. Mangum

Gary L. Mangum, age 79, of Hamel, passed away Tuesday, May 19, in St. Louis University Hospital. Funeral services for 79 year-old Gary L. Mangum will be Saturday, May 23 at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Hamel. Burial will be in Saint Paul Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to service time at the church. Memorials are suggested to Saint Paul Lutheran Church. The Dauderman Mortuary in Hamel is in charge of arrangements.

He was born on Tuesday, August 27, 1935, in Bethune, SC, the son of Henry and Bleeka (nee Joyner) Mangum.

On Sunday, July 14, 1957, he married Marilyn Olinda Mangum nee Sander who survives.

He was a member of Saint Paul Lutheran Church, Hamel, IL (past Trustee; Elder; School Board; and Treasurer); former St. Paul Dart Ball League.

Gary was born and reared in rural Bethune, South Carolina on a farm. He attended Bethune High School; he graduated from Columbia Commercial College in Columbia, South Carolina. He served 2 years in the Army National Guard and 4 years in the United States Air Force. While assigned to Scott Air Force Base, IL, he met Marilyn. He served 1 1/2 years in Europe mainly Greece. He worked several months at Cassens Transport in Hamel. He worked for 30 years in accounting and budget management at Scott Air Force Base. He traveled extensively throughout the Military Air Lift System. After retirement he worked for Hopcraft Electric, Glen Carbon, IL, for many years. He enjoyed hunting with his sons and close friend Lawrence Brase, Sr. He took pride in his garden and his beautiful yard. He enjoyed reading, playing cards and dominos with friends and walking his beloved dog “Pete”. He passed away with his family by his side.
