Rev. Edna L. Rainey

Rev. Edna L. Rainey, age 96 of Greenville, passed away at 3:15 a.m. Sunday, May 10, 2015 at Helia Health Care in Greenville.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, 2015 with Rev. Rudolph Muzzarelli officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Auburn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Donnell-Wiegand from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 1:00 p.m. Wednesday until service time. For those who desire memorials in Edna’s memory may be made to the Central Christian Church at Donnell-Wiegand.

Edna Lee Smith, the daughter of Lonnie Arthur Smith and Winnie Myrtle Oakley Smith, was born on the Smith farm on August 20, 1918 in Marshall County, Benton, Kentucky. She grew up in Trigg County, moving to Cadiz, Kentucky where she attended the one room school there. Edna moved to the Granite City area at the age of eleven where she lived in Prairie Town on the Farm, and attended the Omphghent School. She lived in Edwardsville during the depression.

Edna and Rev. Melvin Dee Evans were united in marriage on December 7, 1934 in Dover, Tennessee and only had 17 years together before his death in 1951. They raised their three children in Madison, Illinois, and Granite City. Edna met Robert R. Rainey a widower and they were married on January 19, 1957 in Granite City and have enjoyed over 58 years together. Robert survives as does one of Edna’s five children: Phyllis R. (Edmund) Willis of Maryland Heights, MO, 6 grandchildren including: Douglas Willis, Allen Gardner, Cheryl (Stan) Hibbard, Ricky Evans, Brenda Evans, Sandy Evans, 11 great-grandchildren: including Ashley Willis, Nichole Willis, Daniel Willis, Ricky’s 2 boys, Jessica Gardner, Charles Gardner, Tyler Gardner, Travis Gardner, Leeanne (Mark) Moseley, Amy (Chris) Lackey, and 4 great-grandchildren including Desmond Gardner, and Maddox Lackey. Edna is also survived by her last living sister Daisy Floetta Jarvis of Greenville, step son Gerald E. (Betty) Raisey of Shreveport, LA. step daughter-in-law Lanna Raisey Leidner of Vandalia, 9 step grandchildren, 30 step great-grandchildren, and 41 step great-great-grandchildren.

Edna is preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Rev. Melvin Dee Evans, four children: Shirley Lee Gardner, Evan Dee Evans, Nancy Evans age 7, Ralph Evans in infancy, one grandchild, her step son Robert William Rainey who died on Dec. 16, 2008, one step great-great grandchild, and seven siblings, brothers Lonnie Aldon Smith, Maston Earl Smith, Seldon Ray Smith, James Thomas Smith, and sisters Zola may Adams, Erma Eudora Frankford, and Cora Estelle Smith in infancy.

Edna and Robert moved to Greenville area in 1957 living on the Rainey
farm, and to Greenville in 1960 where Edna has been the minister of the Pentecostal Church of God on South Third Street since 1960.
