Dr. Harold J. Williams, age 95, a long-time Greenville resident, passed away Monday, July 27, in the Hitz Home in Alhambra. Private graveside services for 95 year-old Dr. Harold J. Williams will be in the Mulberry Grove Cemetery with military honors by Greenville VFW Post 1377. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church. The Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home in Greenville is in charge of arrangements.
Born on July 22, 1920 in East St. Louis, IL the son of Martha and Joseph Williams, he had celebrated his 95th birthday last week. Dr. Williams served in World War II in North Africa and Italy receiving a Purple Heart after being wounded in action. He was married to the former Pauline Branch on January 17, 1945 in Piggott, AR. He is survived by his wife Pauline; daughters Lee Ann Taylor of Ferguson, MO and Julia (Denne) Evans of Greeneville, TN; brother Richard Williams of Urbana, IL; niece Lora (Van) Vieregge of Greenville; great-nieces Loran (Luis) Solorio and Eran Vieregge, of Ann Arbor, MI; nephews Dan (Darlene) Williams of Mesa, AZ and Randy Williams of Urbana, IL. He was preceded in death by twin daughters and a son in infancy and his only grandchild Brandon Taylor in 2008.
Dr. Williams graduated from St. Louis Chiropractic College in 1950 and had a private practice in Greenville for fifteen years. After practicing in Shelbyville, KY for a few years, he returned to Greenville where he was employed by the State of Illinois as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor until his retirement in 1982. Dr. Williams was a member of the First Christian Church in Greenville and had served as an Elder.
