Francis L. “Frank” Bowles


Francis L. “Frank” Bowles, age 89, of Marine, passed away Friday, July 17 in Staunton. Funeral services for 89 year old Francis L. “Frank” Bowles will be Tuesday, July 21 at 10:00 a.m. at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Marine. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery in Alhambra. Friends may call Monday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to service time at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Highland Animal Shelter.

He was born October 18, 1925, in Livingston, IL, the son of Levi and Lena (nee Ostwirt) Bowles.

On March 26, 1946, he married Dorothy Laverne Slemmer who passed away October 25, 2006.

He was a member of VFW Post # 5694 Highland, IL – Becker Redding American Legion Post # 702 Marine, IL.

Frank was born at Livingston, IL and after his education he joined the US Marine Corps during WW II where he “Hit the Beach at Iwo Jima”. After service he worked as a coal miner, then a laborer in construction. He served with the US Air Force as a Reservist for 8 years while working at Scott Air Force Base as a Supply Officer. Then transferred to the US Coast Guard in 1964 in St. Louis. He retired in 1980 and enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, gardening, and he and his wife enjoyed dancing. Frank also served as Chaplain and was a Life Member of V.F.W.
