Margaret A. Von Hatten, age 91, of Carlyle, passed away Wednesday, July 22 at Lavender Ridge Care Center in Mount Vernon. A Mass of Christian Burial for 91 year old Margaret Von Hatten will be Saturday, July 25 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Teresa’s Church – Marydale. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. at Zieren Funeral Home in Carlyle.
Mrs. Von Hatten was born on July 31, 1923, in Carlyle, a daughter of Vincent P. and Bernadine M. (Luepke) Schaefer. She married Elmer Frank Von Hatten at St. Teresa Church in Marydale on August 16, 1949, and he preceded her in death on December 18, 2007.
Margaret is survived by her children – John Thomas Von Hatten and wife Eileen of St. Louis, Richard Von Hatten of Knoxville, Tennessee, Mary Beth Mezo and husband Tony of Mount Vernon, and Kathleen Jones and husband Steve of Herrin; a daughter-in-law – Anna Von Hatten of Fairview Heights; 9 grandchildren – Grace and Rose Von Hatten, Jessica and Christie Von Hatten, Emily and Sophie Von Hatten, Tony Haselroth, and Michael and Mary Jones; and a sister – Mary Barrett of California.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband; a son—Mark Von Hatten; her siblings – John Thomas Schaefer and wife Dorothy, and Harold Vincent Schaefer and wife Delores; and a brother-in-law – Robert Barrett.
Mrs. Von Hatten was the head cashier at Farmers and Merchants Bank in Carlyle, and was the secretary and treasurer of Clinton County Mutual Fire Insurance Co. She was a member of St. Teresa’s Church, where she was the organist and a member of the Ladies Sodality. Margaret loved to sew and was a talented seamstress.
