George Malcolm (Mac) Hughey

George Malcolm (Mac) Hughey, 89, of Greenville died on September 8, 2015, at St. Luke’s hospital in St. Louis, MO.

Memorial Services will be held Saturday, September 12, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at Greenville First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Gregory Groves officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Auburn Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at the church prior to the service, starting at 10:00 a.m.

Mr. Hughey was born February 6, 1926, in Greenville, IL, to Elmer D. and Nelle P. (Thacker) Hughey. He grew up in Greenville attending Central School and Greenville High School graduating in 1944.

Following graduation he joined the United States Navy and attended the University of Illinois through the ROTC program. He graduated with a degree in Chemistry in 1947 and was honorably discharged. He returned to Greenville to assist his father in the family business and was asked by the superintendent of schools to teach Mathematics in the local high school. He enjoyed this experience for two years. In 1949 he married Doris J. Harford and continued his responsibilities in managing Hughey Hardware. Mr. Hughey served on the Greenville Fire Department for 28 years, as Chief for 18 years, the Greenville Civil Defense organization, and the Boy Scouts of America, serving five years as Scout Master and receiving the Silver Beaver award for leadership. In his young adult years as well as in later life, Mr. Hughey served as a Red Cross swimming and life-saving instructor. During the 1960’s and ’70s, Mr. Hughey was an active member in quartet and chorus performances of the local chapter of the national barbershop singer’s organization. In 1976 he began work as a regional representative for the Ace Hardware Corporation and assisted in the development of retail hardware stores throughout Illinois. Upon retirement in 1994, he and Doris enjoyed international travel and genealogical research. Mr. Hughey was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greenville, serving as a teacher, Deacon, and Elder. He is a member of the American Legion, 282, and the V. F. W. Post 1377.

Mr. Hughey was preceded in death by his parents, his brother M. Stanley Hughey, his wife, Doris, and his son, Jeffrey L. Hughey, an engineering student at Purdue University at the time of his death in 1975. He is survived by his son-in-law, Thomas E. Rasler, and daughter, Susan Hughey-Rasler.
