Robert J. “Bob” Nix, age 98 of Carlyle and formerly of Kirkwood, Missouri, died on Saturday, September 26, 2015, at Carlyle Healthcare Center in Carlyle, Illinois.
Mr. Nix was born on April 1, 1917, in St. Louis, Missouri, a son of James C. Nix, Jr. and Anna (Schemel) Nix. He married Virginia R. Cinnater, daughter of William and Cecelia (Braun) Cinnater, on November 20, 1941.
Mr. Nix is survived by 2 daughters – Barbara Jean O’Dea and husband Richard of Paterson, New Jersey and Janet Ann “Jan” Golding and husband Richard W. “Ric”, Sr. of Carlyle; 2 granddaughters – Jennifer Ann O’Dea and husband Paulo Heyman, and Andrea (Golding) Merian and husband Theo; a grandson – Skipp Golding and wife Tina; great grandchildren – Payton and Addison Golding, Luke and Mara Merian, and Anika, Reid and Graham O’Dea-Heyman; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife – Virginia “Ginny” Nix on September 12, 2008; a brother – William E. Nix and wife Dorothy; and a sister – Doris L. Fuchs and husband Robert.
A longtime employee of the United States Fidelity and Guarantee Company, he retired as a special agent in 1982. Mr. Nix was an avid gardener and was a devotee of the rose. He was certified by the American Rose Society as a consulting rosarian and enjoyed giving lectures and seminars at the Missouri Botanical Garden. He was a member of the Rose Society of Greater St. Louis and served as officer and editor of its publication. He was a lifelong member of the Blue Goose International, an insurance fraternity, serving as officer and editor of its publication for many years.
Mr. Nix served in the Army Medical Corps as an administrative medical technician during World War II and the Korean War. His last assignment was as master sergeant of the Fort Leonard Hospital.
Graveside services will be held at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis at 2:15 P.M. on Wednesday, September 30, 2015. Family and friends are invited to visiting hours at Zieren Funeral Home on Wednesday from 9:00 A.M. until noon. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Mr. Nix are suggested to Villa Catherine Assisted Living in Carlyle and will be received at Zieren Funeral Home.
