C. Ben Collman, age 83, of rural Greenville passed away Saturday, October 31, in Memorial Hospital in Springfield. Funeral services for 83 year-old C. Ben Collman will be Wednesday, November 4, at 11:00 a.m., in the Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home in Greenville. Burial will be in Brown Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday, November 3, from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Brown Cemetery.
Charles Bennie “Ben” Collman, the son of Albert and Ruby (Redfearn) Collman, was born January 11, 1932 in Highland, Illinois. Ben grew up on the family farm in Bond County. He attended the Mt. Vernon Grade School on Pokey Road and then graduated from Pocahontas High School with the class of 1949. He then helped his dad on the family farm from 1949-1952.
Ben served our country in the United States Army. He served during the Korean War, stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska from 1952-1954. He was honorably discharged and returned home. Ben worked as a mechanic for Oscar Henry and the Chevy garage. Ben then went to Southwestern Electric in 1976. He worked as a mechanic and retired as a lineman in 1994.
Ben and Katheryn Paine were united in marriage on August 16, 1957 in Greenville at the First Christian Church. They have enjoyed 58 years together. She survives as do their daughter Linda Collman of rural Greenville. Also surviving is a brother Joe W. Collman of St. Louis, MO and a step-sister Mary Chappel of Greenville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Elizabeth “Betty Lou” Knebel, brother James “Jim” Collman, brother John Alan Collman and a step-sister Theresa Nance.
