LaGarda M. Holtgrave, 93 of Beckemeyer, died at Aviston Countryside Manor on Wednesday, December 2, 2015.
Mrs. Holtgrave was born on September 13, 1922, in Beckemeyer, a daughter of Herman and Margaret (Beckmann) Fauke. She married Walter Nicholas Holtgrave at St. Mary’s Church in Carlyle on April 26, 1949, and he preceded her in death on March 1, 1973.
LaGarda is survived by her children – Steve Holtgrave and wife Missy of Carlyle, Margaret “Margie” Mensen of Belleville, Louise Cerneka and husband Pete of Lebanon, Richard “Rich” Holtgrave and wife Kris of Carlyle, and Julius “Jule” Holtgrave and wife Tina of St. Rose; 18 grandchildren – Steve Holtgrave, Jr., Danny Holtgrave, Andy Holtgrave, Nick Holtgrave, Richie Mensen, Erik Mensen, Nicole Tracy, Amy Cerneka, Peer Cerneka, Chris Thacker, Elizabeth Cerneka-Leahy, Justin Thacker, Erin Etheridge, Sarah Markus, Richie Holtgrave, Jr., Dylan Holtgrave, Austin Holtgrave, and Malina Langenhorst; 19 great grandchildren – Drew Holtgrave, Mel Holtgrave, Jude Holtgrave, Myla Holtgrave, Lyric Mensen, Morgan Mensen, Bella Tracy, Billy Tracy, Griffin Leahy, Mary Leahy, Emma Leahy, Mason Thacker, Olivia Etheridge, Elise Etheridge, Grace Etheridge, Luke Etheridge, Gwenyth LaGarda Etheridge, Cayden Holtgrave, and Alyssa Holtgrave.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, a son – Walter “Wally” Holtgrave, Jr., a son-in-law – Richard “Rick” Mensen, a granddaughter – Gera Thacker, a sister – Martha Lore and husband Raymond, and 4 brothers – Emanuel Fauke, Vincent Fauke, Herman Fauke and wife Anita, and Alfred Fauke and wife Mary.
Mrs. Holtgrave devoted her life to her family and her faith. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Church, where she was a sacristan and member of the choir. She was also a member of the Ladies Sodality, served as a Eucharistic minister, and took communion to those who were unable to attend Mass. Mrs. Holtgrave was an associate of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ. She loved baking and cooking, and was always concerned that others were fed before herself. She also enjoyed quilting, bingo, playing Rummy, and her dogs.
A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, December 5, 2015, at St. Anthony’s Church in Beckemeyer with Fr. George Mauck, celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Anthony’s Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Zieren Funeral Home in Carlyle on Friday, December 4, 2015, from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. and at St. Anthony’s Church on Saturday, December 5, 2015, from 9:00 – 11:00 A.M. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Mrs. Holtgrave are suggested to the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, St. Anthony’s Church, or in the form of Masses and will be accepted at Zieren Funeral Home.
