Joseph L. Bruggemann

Joseph L. Bruggemann, age 82 of Carlyle, passed away at 11:15 A.M. on Sunday, February 14, 2016, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese after a brief illness.

He was born in Huey, Illinois on March 16, 1933, a son of Dorothy A. (Mueller) and Fred Bruggemann. They preceded him in death. He married Lorraine Aker on June 9, 1973, and she survives at Carlyle Healthcare Center.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Bruggemann is survived by his children: Janice Brown and husband Ernie of Beckemeyer and Gerald Skiver and wife Mary Ann of Centralia; his siblings: brothers Ralph and wife Mary of Highland, Gene of Highland and a sister Rita Detmer of Trenton; brothers-in-law: Stanley Detmer of Bartelso and Dennis “Pat” Akers and wife Sheila of Ashland, Missouri; sisters-in-law: Nellie Bruggemann of Sandwich, Illinois and Esther VonHatten of Highland, Illinois; her grandsons: Justin Brown and wife Kathy of Hoffman, Matt Brown of Carlyle, and many nieces and nephews.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; a brother: Paul; his sisters: Cleta Detmer and Helen Isaac; 2 brothers-in-law: Alfred Isaac, Ted “Chummy” Detmer, Alan Akers and Jim VonHatten; a sister-in-law: Betty Bruggemann; and a nephew: Brian Isaac.

Mr. Bruggemann was a dairy farmer all of his life. He and his wife worked on the family farm until their retirement. Joe was then able to enjoy traveling with his wife, Lorraine. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Church in Carlyle, and a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 1382, Carlyle. Joe was an avid Cardinals fan and enjoyed watching ballgames. Mr. Bruggemann was proud of having donated more than 16 gallons of blood, donating more than 100 times, to the American Red Cross throughout his lifetime. Joe will be dearly missed by his wife, his large family, and his many friends.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. The family suggests memorial donations to the Carlyle Healthcare Center Activities Department, and those will be received at Zieren Funeral Home in Carlyle. Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting
