Shirley M. Kingston


Shirley M. Kingston, age 84 of Mulberry Grove, Illinois, passed away at her home Tuesday, April 26, 2022, surrounded by her family.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 29, at the Mulberry Grove First Baptist Church. Interment will follow in McInturff Cemetery. Visitation will be held 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Thursday, April 28, at the Mulberry Grove First Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to the church for the children’s VBS and Kids Arc, Lem Rhodes Foundation or to McInturff Cemetery please make checks to mowing/maintenance fund. Shirley (Carman) Kingston was born April 17, 1938 in Fayette County and grew up in the Vandalia area. She was the daughter of William Earl and Gladys Vienne (Stone) Carman. She enjoyed her elementary years at Ritter School where she loved reading, writing, and math. She graduated from Vandalia High School in 1956.

She married the love of her life, Verlin Kingston, on November 15, 1958 and later were blessed with two daughters. She worked at the coffee shop and then was a supervisor for Illinois Bell Telephone Company in Vandalia for several years before starting a family. Later, she worked at Mulberry Meats for 4 years and then was the accountant for the Village of Mulberry Grove for 14 years. She was a member of Mulberry Grove First Baptist Church for over 50 years where she taught VBS and volunteered on the food committee; she was a prayer warrior, sent encouraging cards, and loved reading her Bible. She also loved to host gatherings where she was famous for many recipes such as her homemade noodles and meatloaf. She focused her life on God, family, and serving others. She also enjoyed watching game shows, Elvis Presley, The Gathers, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Her smile and laughter could light up a room and her kindness was apparent to all.

Surviving are two daughters: Shelley Brimberry and husband Don of Vandalia, Illinois and Sheila Elam and husband Daren on Mulberry Grove, Illinois. Loving grandmother to: Kody Brimberry of Vandalia, Kami Vallero and husband Luke of Maryville, IL, Kourtney Walton and husband Caleb of Greenville, Karlee Brimberry of Mowequa, Illinois, Clint Elam and wife Krystal of Keyesport, and Carrie Yates and Ryan Chamberlain of Mulberry Grove. Great-Grandmother to: Willow, Indi, Knox, Rowan, Mason, Whitley, Sadie, and Bailee.

Shirley was one of 11 children, surviving are 2 sisters: Betty Emerick of Vandalia and Kay Snyder of Vandalia, sister-in-laws; Linda Carman, Sharon Carman, Norma Jean Carman and brother-in-law Bob Wheeler. Preceded in death by siblings: Earl Carman Jr., Jean Tedrick, Barbara Turner, Louise Turner, Bill Carman, George Carman, Gracie Wheeler, and Danny Carman. She was also preceded in death by her parents and husband Verlin on May 27, 2013.
