Lady Comets Tennis Tie For First In Tournament

The Lady Comets tennis team hosted the South Central Conference tournament Saturday, tying for first place with the Roxana Shells. Both GHS and Roxana had 5 team points although Greenville made the finals in both singles and doubles.

In singles Emily Henderson earned a point for the Lady Comets by beating Hillsboro’s A. Talley 6-2, 6-1. She lost her 2nd match to #1 seed H. Blythe of Vandalia and in the match for 3rd place she was defeated by the #2 seed S. Owsley from Roxana. Owsley was playing for 3rd place because Greenville’s Abby Gaffner who came in as the #3 seed beat Vandalia’s E. Meyer 6-3,6-3 before knocking off #2 seed Owsley to reach the Finals. Gaffner was defeated in the finals by #1 seed Blythe 6-2, 6-1 but still claimed the 2nd place All-Conference medal.

In doubles, Greenville’s Katie Timmermann & Rebecca Sponsler had the misfortune of meeting the #1 seeded Ballard sisters from Roxana,in the first round and lost to them 6-1, 6-2.

The other Greenville doubles team of Anya Thomas/Katelyn Eller,seeded #2, beat Vandals Dossett/Dossett 7-5, 6-1 then overcame Hillsboro’s Anderson/King 4-6, 6-0, 7-5 before falling 6-0,6-1 to the #1 seeded Ballards from Roxana in the Finals.Thomas & Eller made All-conference as well with their 2nd place showing.

For the 2nd straight year the Lady Comets are SCC Champions. Last year the Lady Comets were outright champs; this year they share the honor with Roxana.
