Comets Tennis Finish Season 14-2

The GHS boys’ tennis team had their best showing at Sectionals in recent history this weekend but could not quite accomplish a state-qualifying finish. All of their first round matches were facing opponents from Highland High School.

Kenan Oestreich faced 4th seed Zach Plocher from Highland and lost 1-6, 1-6. The pair played many long points and several deuce games.

Will Schaufelberger and Jeremiah Brannon lost in the first round to the 5th seed # 1 Highland doubles team of Long & Barker. The set score was 4-6, 3-6 with most games going to deuce.

Michael Intud and Silas Groves faced the #2 doubles team from Highland of Bargetzi & Parker in the first round and defeated them by a score of 6-1, 6-1.

Mitch Cole faced the #2 Singles entry from Highland and earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Andrew Roach. In the second round, Mitch battled hard against the tournament #3 seed Riley Muren from Highland, losing in two sets 4-6, 3-6. Mitch took an early lead in the 2nd set, but was outlasted by his opponent.

The second round for Intud and Groves placed them against the #3 seed team of Lloyd and Garry from O’Fallon. This match could not have been closer. Both sets went to tiebreaker with the final score being 6-7 (8-10 in tiebreaker) and 6-7 (3-7) for a disappointing but very respectable loss.

The Comets finish their season 14-2.
