Three Wins this Week for Comet Soccer

The past week has been a busy one for the Comets Soccer team. They hosted Litchfield at home on Tuesday, traveled to Carlyle on Thursday and were back at Tom Doll Field again on Friday.

Tuesday’s evening match was the Comets’ Senior Night. The Comets will be graduating 9 seniors (Jeremiah Brannon, Mandrake Devine, Ty Ephron, Daniel Forsberg, Mahari Holt, Matthew James, Joshua Pierce, Andrew Riddle, and Nicholas Watterson). All of the seniors started the match, in which the Comets won 4-0. First half goals came from Junior Noah Owens, in the 5th minute and Junior Jordan Schauwecker, in the 17th minute. Schauwecker’s goal was assisted by Sophomore Jonathan Hall. Second half goals came from Schauwecker in the 51st minute, and Freshman Kyle Sunderland in the 80th minute (last minute of play). Sunderland’s goal was assisted by Nicholas Watterson. The Comets out-shot the Purple Panthers of Litchfield 18 to 6. Noah Matthews recorded the shutout in goal with 5 saves.

On Thursday, the Comets traveled to Carlyle to play the Indians on their Senior Night. The Comets won the contest by a score of 2-0, led to victory on goals by Senior Joshua Pierce, the first of his 2-season career with the Comets, and Freshman Kyle Sunderland. Pierce’s goal was assisted by Senior Ty Ephron and it came just 2 minutes into the 2nd half. The insurance goal from Sunderland did not come until the 77th minute and it was unassisted. The Comets out-shot the Indians 17-2. Noah Matthews earned the shutout in goal with 1 save.

The Friday match against the Roxana Shells was the first quarterfinal match of Regionals. Greenville is hosting the regional this year which is comprised of the following teams: Belleville-Althoff Catholic, East-Alton Wood-River, Metro-East Lutheran, Roxana, and Greenville. As the lowest ranked teams in the Regional, Roxana and Greenville played the quarterfinal match for an opportunity to play the top seed, Belleville-Althoff Catholic on Tuesday.

The Comets got out to an early lead, Friday against the Shells, and never looked back as they sought to avenge an early season 1-0 loss. Senior Mahari Holt put the Comets out front in the 5th minute after beating a defender to a thru-ball and poking it past the keeper. The lead was padded 4 minutes later when Junior Jordan Schauwecker found himself able to lift the ball over the goalkeeper after a thru-ball from Freshman Kyle Sunderland. The halftime score was 2-0 with the Comets out-shooting the Shells 10-2. The scoring continued throughout the second half. Schauwecker netted his second of the match just 12 minutes into the half, with a lovely touch from a wonderful cross by Sunderland. In the 79th minute, the Comets put in 2 insurance goals. One by Senior Nicholas Watterson, and the other by Schauwecker. The last Comet goal was Schauwecker’s third on the night. The Shells only managed 3 shots in the second half, with Junior Noah Matthews only needing to make 2 saves. Matthews earned the 3rd shutout of the week for the Comets and only had the 2 saves.

The Comets will play Belleville-Althoff Catholic on Tuesday in a 4:30 Regional Semifinal Match. This regional, played at Tom Doll Field is just the second hosted by Greenville in the history of the Boy’s Soccer team, with the last being in the early 2000’s. Following the Comets match, will be EAWR vs. Metro East Lutheran, at 6:30pm. The winners of the two games will play each other in the Regional Championship on Friday.

Admission is $4 at all Regional matches, as dictated by the IHSA. The Comets are hoping to have a sea of Royal Blue and White at Tuesday’s match as they look to reverse their fortunes against a strong Althoff team, and advance to Friday’s Championship match.
