The Highland Lady Bulldogs girls basketball team will play at noon Saturday for third place in the Class 3A state tournament.
Highland suffered a heartbreaking loss in the tourney semifinals Friday afternoon, falling in two overtimes to Chicago North Lawndale by the score of 59 to 57.
It was tied 42 to 42 at the end of regulation time and 50 to 50 after the first overtime.
Highland led 54 to 51 with 2:30 left in the second overtime, but couldn’t hold on. North Lawndale took the lead for good with 2 minutes left.
Highland shot 38 percent overall from the field and was 13 of 19 at the free throw line. North Lawndale made 43 percent of its field goal attempts and had a 7 to 4 advantage in three-pointers made. The winners sank 12 of 17 free throws.
Top scorer for Highland was Amanda Ponce with 24 points. Alex LaPorta grabbed 13 rebounds.
The state finals action is being held in Redbird Arena on the campus of Illinois State University in Normal. The championship game follows the third place game about 1:45 p.m. Saturday.
Highland enters the third place game with an overall record of 30 and 5.
