The Gary S. Wheeler Memorial Scholarship has been established to honor the memory of former Carlyle High School educator and coach, Gary Wheeler. Former players and colleagues have formed the Gary S. Wheeler Memorial Fund and established this benefit to make sure his dedication to the education and growth of student athletes can continue to touch lives for years to come, by supporting a deserving Class of 2016 Carlyle High School senior male varsity athlete and senior female varsity athlete in their pursuit of a degree in a qualifying course of study at an institution of higher education. The recipients of this benefit will be awarded a one-time $400.00 benefit (to be given to the student upon class enrollment) toward textbooks, fees, or other legitimate college expenses. “Our goal is to honor and remember Coach Wheeler in addition to his impact on students at Carlyle High School,” said fund director Craig Robertson. “Through our annual golf event coupled with the assistance of numerous local sponsors and individual donors, we are truly excited to provide this support opportunity.”
Coach Wheeler won 417 games, 7 regional titles, and the 1981 State Championship as Carlyle’s baseball coach from 1976 to 2007. In 16 seasons, his football teams were 90-66 with 7 playoff appearances and the 1988 Illinois Class 2A State Championship team, which went undefeated at 14-0. Coach Wheeler was diagnosed with cancer in 2007, and unfortunately lost his battle with the disease in May of 2008. In April 2015, Coach Gary Wheeler was inducted into the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
Scholarship applications are available by visiting the Carlyle High School website, contacting Carlyle High School Guidance Counselor Tammy Branon, or by contacting Craig Robertson at 618-622-3592.
