The Greenville Comets are 2-0 for the season after pulling out a 48-45 home victory Monday night over Pana.
The big difference in the game was free throws, as Pana made just 5 of 16 and the Comets were 14 of 17.
Pana has the ball with 11 seconds remaining and called a timeout with 3.8 seconds on the clock. The Panthers got the ball inbounds on a cross-court pass and a last second three-point attempt was blocked by Desmond Gardner to seal the Comets’ win.
GHS stayed close throughout the game, despite experiencing shooting problems from the floor. The score was tied at 41when Jack Schaufelberger sank a three-pointer with two minutes to play to put the Comets in front for good.
Fletcher Manhart led Greenville High with 15 points, seven from the free throw line. Schaufelberger totaled 13 points, sinking three three-pointers.
Peyton McCullough posted nine points.
The freshman Comets topped Pana 53-41 thanks to a 21-0 run in the fourth quarter, and the junior varsity Comets lost 57-45.
The Comets play at Hillsboro Wednesday night and are at home Friday against Alton Marquette.
