The Greenville Comets had a big second half to recorded a come-from-behind win over Vandalia Friday night in the Greenville High School gym.
The Comets outscored the Vandals 27-12 in the second half to grab a 43-38 victory.
GHS trailed by 12 points late in the first half and was behind by 10 at halftime.
The offense perked up in the second half with some key passes leading to points. Timely steals, blocks and rebounds were also important in the comeback.
The Comets finally tied the score late in the third quarter and took their first leads of the game with 5:40 left to play. While the home team was able to open up a five-point margin , Vandalia cut the deficit to one with two minutes left.
The Comets sank a couple of free throws in the closing seconds, then a steal led to a last-second bucket by Jack Schaufelberger.
Leading the GHS squad in scoring was Schaufelberger with 15 points, 13 of them in the second half. Peyton McCullough totaled nine points with four free throws in the final frame.
The varsity Comets are 4-1 overall for the season and 1-0 in the South Central Conference. They will make up a game this afternoon at Staunton.
Vandalia won Friday night’s junior varsity game 66-56 and edged the Comets in freshman action 40-38.
Top GHS JV scorers were Landon Moss with 15 points and Tyson Ackerman with 12.
In the freshman game, Kaleb Gardner and Nick Grull posted 11 apiece.
The Comet teams travel to Gillespie Monday.
