With a never give up attitude, the Greenville Lady Comets rallied Friday night at home to edge Pana 47-46.
Gwyn Mitchell’s free throw with 3.5 seconds remaining was the difference in the end.
The Lady Comets outscored Pana 15-4 at the free throw line for the night.
Pana led by as many as 10 points in the opening quarter and by eight at halftime. The visitors went up by 12 early in the third quarter and still had an eight point margin going into the last quarter.
GHS outscored Pana 20-9 in the last eight minutes. It was tied twice before Lilly Funnemann sank a three-pointer to give the Lady Comets the lead by three.
The score was tied again, 46-46 in the final minute.
Mitchell was fouled in the closing seconds, missing the first free throw but sinking the second one.
Freshman Katie Campbell led the winners in scoring with 14 points. Natalie Iberg had 13 while Mitchell and Abby Sussenbach put in eight apiece.
The Lady Comets are 8-4 overall and 6-2 in the South Central Conference.
They play Saturday afternoon at Litchfield.
In junior varsity action, Pana edged GHS 55-53. Hannah Potthast posted 15 points, and Charlee Stearns and Natalie McCullough had 11 apiece.
In a freshman contest that went just two quarters, the Lady Comets defeated Pana.
