Comets Defeated At Vandalia


The Greenville Comets were unable to hold on to a big lead Friday night at Vandalia and lost 53-49.

Greenville High led most of the game, jumping out to a 23-11 advantage after one quarter and leading 31-18 at halftime. The Comets were in front by as many as 18 points late in the first half.

The Vandals battled back in the third quarter, outscoring the Comets 18-9 to shrink the GHS lead to four points with a quarter to play.

The score was tied at 44 with about 2:45 left in the game. Vandalia then took the lead and never trailed the rest of the way.

The home team had a 17-point fourth frame, sinking seven of 9 free throws.

The Comets were four of six at the line for the game and sank seven three pointers, all in the first half.

Leading all scorers was the Comets’ Peyton McCullough with 24 points. Jack Schaufelberger put in 14 points and Landen Moss had nine.

The Comets are now 2-1 in the South Central Conference while Vandalia improved to 2-0.

GHS plays in a shootout at St. Joseph-Ogden this morning at 11 o’clock against Paxton-Buckley-Loda. Overall for the season, the varsity Comets own a 6-9 record.

Two other Greenville teams also played at Vandalia Friday.

The junior varsity Comets led for three quarters then lost 57-48. Cale Ackerman scored 13 points for GHS with Tyson Ackerman adding 11 and Hunter Clark finishing with eight.

The freshman Comets beat Vandalia 49-16. Benjamin Hutchinson put in nine points and grabbed seven rebounds. Cale Ackerman also had nine points while Cohen Alstat posted eight points and collected five steals.
