The Greenville Comets played excellent defense to defeat Flora 42-40 in the third place game of the Kaskaskian Classic at Carlyle Saturday.

Flora led by as many as 9 points in the third quarter, but the Comets battled back in the fourth. The score was tied at 36, Flora took the lead, then a basket by Cale Ackerman on a very good assist from Gus Olson made it a 38-38 score.

Olson put the Comets in front with a field goal, then sank a free throw to make it a three-point game with less than a minute to play. It was 41-40 when Ackerman hit a free throw with 26 seconds left to give GHS a two-point lead.

Down the stretch, the excellent Greenville defense caused key Flora turnovers, which allowed time to eventually run out.

After the game, Jeff Leidel talked to Comet Coach Todd Cantrill. Click below to hear part of their converstation:

Ackerman finished the game with 16 points and Gardner had nine on three-three pointers. Ackerman canned two threes and CJ Jackson had one.

Ackerman and Gardner were named to the all-tournament team.

The Comets finished the Classic with a 3-1 mark and are now 4-1 for the season. They play at Litchfield Friday night and at Wesclin Saturday. The games will be broadcast on WGEL.
