The Greenville Lady Comets won their first game in regional play Saturday afternoon and are now in the semifinals of the Mater Dei Class 2A Regional.
Greenville defeated Vandalia 68-39 in a quarterfinal contest at the GHS gym.
Using the defensive press to cause Vandalia turnovers, the Lady Comets jumped out to an 8-0 lead. They were in front 23-9 after one quarter, 41-16 at halftime and 52-28 going into the fourth quarter.
Top scorer was Katie Campbell with 19 points. She recorded the 800th point of her career in the fourth quarter.
Shayna Henderson put in 16 points, and Adyson Bearley, Natalie McCullough and Emma Veith scored nine points apiece.
Campbell’s statistics included 13 rebounds, seven assists and six steals. McCullough posted five steals and Henderson had four assists.
The victory gives the Lady Comets a 19-9 overall record. They play in the semifinals of the Mater Dei Regional at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday against Mater Dei. The winner will advance to the regional title contest.
WGEL plans to broadcast the game.
The other semifinal game, at 6 p.m. Tuesday, will be Nashville against Belleville Althoff. The Althoff girls beat Wesclin 55-31 on Saturday.
In another Lady Comets’ basketball note, Shayna Henderson has tied a school record for steals in a game. She had nine steals Thursday night in the win at Hillsboro.
