In an exciting game Saturday afternoon, the Greenville football Comets won in the first round of the IHSA Class 3A playoffs, 35-32 at Stanford Olympia.

The Comets will play at home this Saturday in the second round of the playoffs against Vandalia.

Dayton Oliver had an outstanding game, scoring a total of four touchdowns.  He ran for 293 yards and caught a 64-yard TD pass.

Quarterback Bauer Ackermann completed eight of 11 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns.  The second one ended up being the game-winner, as Ackerman connected with Taevon Petty  on a 17-yard play.

Despite taking the lead by scoring on their first drive, the Comets trailed 8-6 after the opening quarter.  They posted three TDs in the second period to lead 28-24 at halftime.

The second half was different offensively for both teams, as the defenses tightened up.  Olympia regained the lead, 32-28 in the third quarter, but the Comets responded with the big pass to Petty to go up 35-32, which ended up being the final score.

The GHS defense came up big late in the game.  As Olympia was driving with the ball, the Spartans fumbled the football and Drake Curry recovered for the Comets.  They were then able to run out the last two minutes and 20 seconds to secure the victory.

John Bohn also recovered a fumble in the game.

Petty finished with three pass receptions for 46 yards.  Caden Boyce caught two for 32 yards Isaiah Matthews had an eight yard pass reception, and Austin Wall caught a throw for seven yards.

Olympia ran for 243 yards but had no yards passing.  The team attempted just one pass.

With a 7-3 record for the season, the Comets will host undefeated Vandalia Saturday afternoon at 2PM and you will hear that game live on WGEL Radio.
