Playing at home Monday night, the junior varsity Greenville Comets football team defeated Vandalia 36-22.
After the Comets took a first quarter lead on a 32-yard TD pass from Easton Walker to Hayden Hediger, Vandalia scored the next two TDS to lead 14-6 after the opening stanza.
Another pass to Hediger, covering 54 yards, and the extra point pass from Walker to Hediger allowed the Comets to tie the score with just under five minutes left in the half. GHS got the ball back with 4.3 seconds left, but instead of running out the clock, the Comets went to the air again. Walker and T.J. Moungo connected on a 78-yard pass to put the home team in front 20-14 at halftime.
The Comets posted two more touchdowns in the third period. The first was on a 27-yard run by J.J. Brown and the other on a 41 yard pass from Walker to Moungo. The extra point plays were good. Hediger caught a pass and Ashton Henshaw ran the ball into the end zone after the second TD.
The GHS squad intercepted three Vandalia passes. They were by Camden Lawrence, Aleki (al-eh-kigh) Graham and Moungo.
The JV Comets, who own a 5-1 record, travel to Gillespie October 5.
