Ballots Must Be Initialed By An Election Judge

Some voters in Illinois have recently questioned the validity of initials being placed on a ballot when it is issued.

Bond County Clerk Brooke Weathers reports the Illinois State Board of Election has addressed the comments to clarify the matter.

It says that under Illinois law, election judges must initial ballots before issuing them to voters.

The board noted these initials help verify that a ballot was officially issued, and ballots missing official initials may be rejected.

Red ink is commonly used because it is designed not to interfere with ballot tabulation equipment.

The state board emphasized the election judge initials do not disqualify the ballot, but are important in the election process.
